At All Avenues Dog Training, we take great pride in recognising the remarkable abilities and distinctive attributes of Gundog breeds. But what precisely constitutes a Gundog breed?

This category encompasses spaniels, particularly noted for their hunting and flushing capabilities. Prominent examples include the English Springer Spaniel (ESS) and the Working Cocker Spaniel. These breeds have also garnered significant popularity as family companions, having the potential to be exemplary pets when owners understand their breed-specific traits and provide appropriate training that harnesses their innate working instincts.

The retrievers, as their designation implies, are adept at retrieving game. This group includes well-loved breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever, alongside the comparatively lesser-known Flat-Coated Retriever. With the Labrador consistently ranking as the most frequently kept family dog, it exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding family pet. Despite their domesticity, the inherent working instincts of these retrievers remain robust, leading them to delight in retrieving a variety of objects for their owners.

Furthermore, the British native breeds of pointers and setters are tasked with locating and indicating game to the ‘gun’ and retrieving the bird once shot. While these breeds are less prevalent than spaniels and retrievers, they include the recognisable Red Setter, alongside the Gordon Setter and the English Pointer.

Lastly, we consider the Hunt, Point, and Retrieve (HPR) breeds, these are continental and European breeds which are designed to perform all roles required in hunting and shooting endeavours, as their collective name implies. In recent years, several HPR breeds have gained traction as domestic pets. Examples of these breeds include the Hungarian Vizsla, Weimaraner, and Bracco Italiano.
